Atrium Health Lake Norman, a five-story, 200,000-square-foot acute care hospital, celebrated its grand opening in July 2025, capping a $250 million construction odyssey that transformed a 28.8-acre site into a vital healthcare hub for northern Mecklenburg County's booming Lake Norman region. Originally greenlit in 2021 as a $154 million, 160,000-square-foot facility with 30 beds, the project expanded through value-added design phases to include 38 inpatient rooms--among them four labor and delivery suites poised for 900-1,100 annual births--while integrating advanced imaging, on-site pharmacy, laboratory services, and a 24/7 emergency department with eight treatment bays and a dedicated helipad.
This joint venture between JE Dunn Construction and McFarland Construction, which broke ground in May 2023 after two years of planning and rezoning approvals, not only addresses the area's 20% population surge over the past decade but also creates over 300 new healthcare jobs, bolstering Atrium Health's $1 billion-plus capital investment in regional infrastructure since 2018.
The 24-month construction timeline--from the May 2023 groundbreaking to the July 1, 2025, ribbon-cutting--was executed with a focus on sustainability and community integration, incorporating 30% women-, minority-, or veteran-owned subcontractors, the majority local to Cornelius and Huntersville. Site preparation involved clearing 28.8 acres at the southwest corner of Westmoreland Road and NC Highway 21, followed by the erection of a reinforced concrete frame using approximately 15,000 cubic yards of concrete and 1,800 tons of rebar to meet seismic and wind-load standards for the lakeside location.
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) rough-ins spanned the first 12 months, with Precision Plumbing's virtual design and construction (VDC) efforts accelerating coordination through Revit modeling that reduced field conflicts by 25% and kept the project on track despite supply chain hurdles. The team's tireless efforts and late nights were instrumental in meeting tight deadlines and ensured our piping integrations aligned perfectly with the structural and electrical trades, keeping the entire build moving forward without delays.
Central to the hospital's operational core are its two operating rooms and two procedure rooms, outfitted with hybrid suites supporting minimally invasive surgeries via integrated fluoroscopy and 4K endoscopy feeds, all fed by Precision Plumbing's medical gas and deionized water systems for sterile precision. The emergency department, spanning 10,000 square feet, features eight trauma bays with direct helipad access for rapid transports, while the labor and delivery floor includes a dedicated C-section OR and postpartum recovery areas designed for family-centered care.
Adjoining the hospital is a 72,000-square-foot medical office building (MOB), completed in August 2025, housing 61 exam rooms, two X-ray suites, and specialties from the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute and Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute--spaces where Precision Plumbing's sanitary and lab waste lines enable efficient on-site diagnostics. The facility's smart infrastructure, including HEPA-filtered HVAC with 100% backup power and virtual nursing pods, optimizes energy use across the 200,000 square feet, targeting a 15% reduction in operational costs through zoned controls and LED fixtures.
Budget refinements elevated the project's value from the initial $154 million certificate-of-need approval to $250 million by 2025, incorporating the fifth-floor expansion and MOB while leveraging economies from local sourcing--over 70% of materials procured within 100 miles. This investment aligns with Atrium Health's post-merger growth under Advocate Health, enhancing access for the Lake Norman area's 150,000+ residents who previously traveled 20-30 minutes south to Charlotte for advanced care. "The population of the Lake Norman region is growing rapidly, and the demand for high-quality care is growing right alongside it," said Eugene Woods, CEO of Advocate Health, at the opening announcement. "Atrium Health Lake Norman represents our commitment to redefining care close to home." The campus also weaves in biophilic elements, like a healing garden mural inspired by Lake Norman's shores and natural light-flooded patient rooms, fostering wellness amid the 38-bed inpatient tower.
As Atrium Health Lake Norman enters full operations, it stands as a testament to collaborative craftsmanship, with Precision Plumbing's extensive piping network ensuring the backbone of care delivery for generations. We're honored to have contributed to a facility that will serve thousands and strengthen access to high-quality care in this region. Future phases, slated for 2030, will add up to 90 more beds and expanded outpatient services, solidifying Cornelius as a healthcare destination.
